ALMOND GRADE DEFINITIONS
DISSIMILAR VARIETIES Any lot sold by variety can have no more than 5% by weight of another variety
CHIPPED & SCRATCHED Fancy: chips and scratches which together are greater than a 1/8 inch diameter circle All other grades: chips and scratches which together are greater than a 14 inch diameter circle
FOREIGN MATERIAL Pieces of shell, hulls, etc. greater than 1/8 inch
PARTICLES AND DUST Almond pieces and other foreign material smaller than 1/8 inch
WHOLE KERNELS Less than 1/8 of the nut is chipped off or missing
SPLIT AND BROKEN Less than 7/8 of whole kernals, but larger than 1/8 inch
SERIOUS DAMAGE Decay, rancidity, insect injury, mold
DAMAGE (a) chipped and scratched as defined above (b) mold which can easily be rubbed off (except white or gray molds) (c) gum covering more than 1/8 of the surface (d) shriveled nuts which are less than 3/4 filled (e) brown spots which togethe cover more than 1/8 of the nut
OTHER DAMAGE (b), (c), (d), and (e) as defined above
UNDERSIZE Almond pieces smaller than 20/64 inch
1.70 RULE FOR SIZE UNIFORMITY 10% largest nuts by count equal 1.70 x 10% smallest nuts by count
